15-22 Barrel Nut Wrench

Follow all safety protocols for you firearm. It is easiest if you work with just the bare upper. WARNING: DO NOT put the back of the receiver against anything. The ejector is part of the barrel assembly. If it comes out of the receiver too quickly and hits something, you can break or bend the ejector. Here are the tools you will need to use this wrench. The tools you will need: A) 5” Bench Vise(the length of the jaws) B) 15/16 open end wrench (Pipe wrench or pliers in a pinch) Or 15/16 crows foot with torque wrench C) Barrel Vise Jaws available from Tacticool22.com Or old leather belt to wrap around the barrel Procedure for removing the barrel nut; 1) Remove the flash hider or other device, if there is one. 2) Remove the hand guard end cap. There are 4 plastic clips molded into it. Look in the holes at the front of the hand guard, in-between the Picatinny rails. Push them towards the barrel and then the muzzle, one at a time, until it comes out. 3) Slip the wrench over the barrel until it bottoms out on the barrel nut. 4) Put the barrel in the barrel vise jaws and tighten. 5) Turn the wrench by hand until the “dogs” of the wrench engage the slots in the nut. 6) Use your 15/16 wrench to loosen the barrel nut. Once the nut is loose, you can remove the upper from the vise and use your hand on the wrench to unscrew the nut. It is a VERY fine thread and takes a while to unscrew all the way. 7) Once the nut is fully unscrewed. Hold onto the wrench and point the muzzle down. As you withdraw the wrench, the nut will come with it. 8) Lay the entire upper so it is horizontal. You do not want the muzzle pointing up. Down is OK. 9) Pull the hand guard off. It might take some wiggling. 10) Lay the upper on a towel or something soft, gently tap the muzzle till the barrel starts to slide out of the upper. That’s it. Procedure for tightening the barrel nut; 1) Opposite of removal. 2) Be careful when starting the nut. It is a very fine thread and can be cross threaded easily. Here is an old mechanics tip. While pushing with the barrel nut wrench by hand, unscrew the nut until it “clicks” this tells you the threads are in the right place to start tightening.
